Spain Has a Brand-new Winter Train Service

Madrid is a glorious city to visit at pretty much any time of the year, but winter is when the surrounding mountains are at their most beautiful. Excitingly, exploring the Iberian Peninsula’s stunning landscape is about to become a whole lot easier this winter – and you won’t even need a car.

Spanish rail operator Renfe has just launched a new winter campaign on its ‘Carnaías’ system, and it enables passengers to visit the mountains from Madrid for a very budget-friendly price.

After some significant improvements to the zona verde (‘green zone’) C9 line, and the individual stations in the area, Renfe has launched the promotion to encourage visitors to make the most of the revitalised service.

The green zone C9 travels through the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, including the southern side of the Seven Peaks, the Valsaín Valley, Navalmedio, Fuenfría and the Mirador de la Reina. You can explore the gorgeous landscape from stations in Cercedilla, Puerto de Navacerrada and Cotos.

The promotion, which began on December 2 and will run until March 31, 2024, is valid from Monday to Friday, and means that purchasing two adult tickets for only €34.80 (£29.80, $37.50) also includes a free ticket for a child up to the age of 11. These tickets can only be booked in person at stations, and you can book up to six days in advance.

For more information on ticket inclusions and restrictions, you can have a look at Renfe’s website for more information.
