Ahead of unfavorable weather, firefighters battle a wildfire in Spain’s Castellon region

Officials said they were working to secure the perimeter of a growing wildfire in Spain’s Castellon region that had already burnt 4,600 hectares and spread to a perimeter of 55 km (34 miles) by March 29, ahead of “unfavorable weather forecasts.”

Some 1,600 people have been evacuated from the mountainous interiors of Castellon and Teruel due to the Villanueva Viver wildfire.

Video posted by firefighters on March 28 showed a plane dropping water on a burning hillside. The firefighters said the footage was filmed in the Fuente la Reina region, where the town was under threat from the fire on March 28.

El Pais reported, citing a local fire department source, that the town had been “successfully defended” on Wednesday, and that the flames had not reached a nearby national park.

Officials said that strong wind gusts were expected on Thursday, with work being carried out to “refresh, secure and review” the fires perimeter as a result.
